Ashley Borne
As a stay-at-home mom of four, Ashley Borne’s life is full of joyful chaos. From band to JROTC, archery to dance, she and her husband are always on the go with their children. But living with chronic Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS)—an autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system—means Ashley faces daily challenges many don’t see.
Recently, a viral illness paired with shifting weather triggered a severe flare of her condition. The resulting weakness and loss of sensation caused Ashley to fall at home, leaving her unable to get up. Thankfully, her 15-year-old son found her and made all the right calls to get help.
Ashley was admitted to Greenview Regional Medical Center and later transferred to The Medical Center at Bowling Green, where she received IV antibiotics to help manage symptoms of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, a complication of her GBS. When it came time for rehabilitation, there was no doubt in her mind where she wanted to go.
“It’s obvious that SKY Rehab is where anyone should go to get better so they can get back to their life,” Ashley said. “I’ve been to SKY before, and every time, my therapists have been excellent. I’ll be battling this condition for the rest of my life, and the team at SKY Rehab makes that battle just a little bit easier.”
Ashley worked incredibly hard during her time at Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital, motivated every day by her children. She FaceTimed them every night, and it was her youngest, just five years old, who gave her the most powerful motivation of all: “Mommy, I can’t wait to have goodnight hugs for reals.”
With her dedication and the support of the SKY Rehab team, Ashley made her family’s dream come true. She’s returned home, and those long-awaited goodnight hugs are finally happening again.
Ashley will continue her recovery in SKY Rehab’s outpatient therapy program, and we’re honored to walk alongside her on this journey.
Ashley, thank you for inspiring us with your strength, spirit, and love. We’re cheering you on every step of the way!
