Amputation Rehabilitation Program

The loss of a limb is life-altering and recovery is an ongoing journey. The Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital team is here to provide direction and support along the way.

Individuals who have experienced the loss of a limb can benefit from a specialized rehabilitation program to address the unique challenges they face afterward. Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital’s comprehensive approach to amputee rehabilitation addresses the physical, emotional, social, and day-to-day challenges of life post-amputation.

Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital’s post-amputation rehabilitation program focuses on:

Promoting recovery in a safe healing environment.

We provide 24-hour nursing care and daily physician management. Board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, also known as physiatrists, lead our hospital’s care team. Our team of skilled professionals provides close supervision and treatment of medical issues, allowing patients to focus on their recovery goals and safely participate in their therapy programs.

To promote proper wound healing, our specialists can treat post-operative wounds and monitor for any developing concerns. We also assist with managing new medications and can address any pain management needs that may arise, including phantom limb pain.

Maximizing each individual’s strength and independence.

Rehabilitation is our specialty. Our team of rehab experts will develop a program specific to each individual’s goals and needs. Our patients receive physical therapy services to improve mobility, strength, endurance, and confidence. At the same time, occupational therapists work with patients on self-care activities and the use of assistive devices. We also provide prosthetic services, training, and support.

Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital offers a spacious therapy gym, state-of-the-art equipment, and functional living areas. Functional living areas are spaces specially designed to simulate a home environment. Here patients can safely practice newly learned therapy techniques before returning home.

Providing direction and support for both patients and their family members.

The loss of a limb creates many challenges. We’re here to help our patients and their families through the physical, emotional, and social changes they may experience. Our team members can provide family education and help make connections to community resources such as amputee support groups. Our social work and case management employees work hard to make sure each patient and their family members have the support they need.

Our services are provided by a team of skilled, compassionate medical professionals. Learn more about our interdisciplinary team approach.

    Sandra Borden

Sandy Borden lived a busy life filled with simple joys, such as watching her granddaughters, caring for her dogs and cats, cooking, and sipping coffee on her front porch. However, her world was turned upside down when her health took a sudden and critical turn.
Diagnosed with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, Sandy underwent a transaortic septal myectomy at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. While the procedure was successful, her recovery was complicated by respiratory failure, which required her to spend 11 days on a ventilator and 20 days in the ICU, leaving her physically weakened.

  • Beverly Ford
    Beverly Ford

After experiencing right-sided weakness and slurred speech, Beverly went to the emergency room at TJ Samson Community Hospital, where she learned she had suffered a stroke the night before. This life-changing event left her with significant challenges: right-sided weakness, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), slurred speech (dysarthria), and total dependence on others for her daily activities. The road to recovery was going to be long and demanding.

  • Deidra Wilson

Three years ago, doctors found a glioblastoma in Deidra’s brain. After receiving treatment with chemo and radiation, Deidra was cancer-free! Recently, Deidra ended up at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville after suffering a severe stroke. Deidra’s doctors referred her to Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital for intensive inpatient rehabilitation.

  • Michelle Weaver

Michelle had been healthy with no warning signs when she fell one day getting into the shower. The symptoms then came fast — numbness in her hands, feet, and tongue and trouble walking. She called 911 for help, and an ambulance transported her immediately to the hospital.
